The film brims with biblical symbolism and religious overtones. Here the socio-political landscape was quite different than what it used to be.
And in this era, Malick decided to make an epic period piece about the American colonization of the native American tribes. This was a time when people were starting to address the atrocities committed towards the native Americans.
Malick could have taken the easy road by just preaching the injustice done by the settlers. He gave us an unbiased emotional account without any sort of statement from his side.
Once again, he acted as the observer of things rather than judging them. He left the interpretation open-ended. The film is a magnificent study into the human side of American settlement and the reaction of the native Americans.
And like all his other works, this too is a visual marvel. It takes us into the minds of those who are fighting it. The storytelling style is quite unconventional.
The singular protagonist is done away with. And we are left with different narrators who share their experiences of the war. We focus on the themes of masculinity, as the movie looks at men with a newfound sensitivity.
The idea of mortality is tackled amazingly well. Imminent death is contrasted with the will to live for a loved one. A magical juxtaposition of war, philosophy and the life that is stuck in between is drawn by Terrence Malick in this marvelous movie that for once, united people into considering it a beloved classic.
The movie is a deep deliberation on family and the natural universe as a composite unit. It is visually breathtaking and I must say that it is the best visual and auditory spectacle that Terrence Malick has conjured up on the silver screen.
Through the lives of a Texas-based family in the s, Terrence Malick shows us the beauty of life on a universal and spiritual scale. The naturalistic imagery coupled with some of the best choices in classical music render an experience that can only be defined as sublime.
This non-chronological and brightly colored philosophical canvas stands as one of the most influential works in experimental cinema.
Through this movie Terrence Malick showed a great deal of expertise and understanding of the Hollywood film formula. He did an amazing job at building the characters.
His innovative voice over technique elevates the film to a different level. Usually voiceovers are considered to be lazy expository tools to further the plot.
But Malick uses it in a very different way. The voiceovers are the musings of the characters, their thoughts about the present.
Hardly any plot is revealed through them. This ability to converse with the listener makes Malick one of the most sensitive filmmakers of his time.
The plot resembles that of a soap opera. He treats it like an unimportant cog in his giant machinery. He once again makes the characters and the things that surround them the central focus of his camera lens.
An actor once said that while he was putting his all into a shot, Terrence Malick was filming a beetle. The dance actor has sung his praises time and time again.
The man himself is a dilemma. His cinematography is not composed of conventional storytelling. His filmmaking style is like a complex poem that winds into itself while pulling you into its magically real world.
